Meridian is a town in Hinds County, Mississippi, United States. The population was 1,898 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Jackson, Mississippi Metropolitan Statistical Area. Meridian is located on the east bank of the Missouri River and is bordered by Petoskey to the north and west, Bayou Lafourche to the south and east, and Putnam County to the southeast. The area that now Meridian was first settled by Native Americans who were displaced by European exploration in what is now southeastern Arkansas. On July 4, 1821, a group of Indian traders from Illinois led by John Jacob Astor landed near present-day Meridian on an island in Cedar Creek and began trading with local natives. By 1830 most of present-day Hinds County had been added to Meridian Township (later named for General James Hinds). In 1871 it was renamed for Governor David Waddell during Reconstruction after his address urging all Mississippians "to put their trust in American hands." In 1880, when a railroad junction was built just northeast of town along main Street (now known as Ulysses S Grant Boulevard), residents raised money to build a bridge across the river so that goods could be transported directly from Yazoo City across into Meridian without having to go through Bayou Lafourche or put up with ferry rides every time they needed something. The $5 million project was completed within two years and became one of America's largest public works projects ever undertaken. During World War II several hundred men worked on building munitions plants at nearby Point Comfort Arsenal; these workers are also credited with rejuvenating downtown Meridian and making it more attractive to tourists since they rebuilt major portions of both streetscape including Main Street between 1915-1917 while still being owned by local merchants as part of what is now called Downtown University District which includes many art galleries., theaters and small businesses today because those buildings were not destroyed during war or taken over by government agencies like HUD or other similar programs/projects like this that have replaced many old commercial districts in our country over recent decades because those types of projects are typically not allowed under current zoning laws which used to be much more lax back when developers were allowed more latitude back then about how their properties could be used whereas these days basically all zoning laws are set out very specifically about how an agency like HUD can only use a certain type of property or district for particular purposes like housing development etcetera etcetera so consequently some historic areas such as downtown Meridian have actually become pretty run down but thankfully due mostly to acts of God few if any residential areas have done likewise because although residential areas can sometimes deteriorate faster than government sponsored non-profit organizations’ goals would predict they do often times there are also quite a few private individuals/groups who care enough about preserving heritage within our community that they will frequently try very hard actually do things like restore older homes/build new ones rather then simply write off entire neighborhoods as having failed thereby effectively saving them)

Meridian is a town in Jackson County, Mississippi, United States. The population was 1,521 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Jackson, MS Metropolitan Statistical Area. Meridian's downtown area is home to the Meridian Museum and Art Gallery. The town was founded on March 15, 1892 by James Tilton and his wife Lucy Bowen Tilton after they moved from Gautier, Louisiana. The town was named for Captain John A. Meridian who had been killed during the American Civil War. The first store in Meridian opened its doors on Main Street in 1895. The first post office opened in 1916 and closed in 1951 due to lack of customers or mail service. In 1957, Meridian began receiving television service from WTVM-TV (channel 3). The first grocery store opened in 1958 and closed in 2003 due to economic conditions; however,the second store reopened as a restaurant called "Welcome Home" in 2009 with expanded hours and more amenities than before including an outdoor kitchenette that can accommodate up to 82 guests for dinner purposes. In 2002, Hurricane Katrina damaged most of downtown Meridian including most of the business district which forced many businesses to close their doors until2004 when reconstruction started and most of the damage was repaired by then In 2013 there were plans for a new shopping mall called "The Landing" adjacent to I-10 but it stalled because of some local reluctance about redevelopment near an interstate highway
Meridian was founded in 1825 by a group of men from Tennessee. The town was located on the banks of the Pearl River, about forty miles east of Jackson. It grew rapidly and soon became an important slave trading center. In 1853, Meridian became the first city in Mississippi to be incorporated as a result of efforts by local officials and investors.
