The community was founded in 1892 by settlers from Illinois and Indiana. The name "Meridian" comes from a creek that flows through the community. A post office was established in Meridian in 1895, and it continued to serve until 1959. In 1902, an electric power plant was built in Meridian by the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA). The plant became operational and increased production for the local paper mills; however, it closed down in 1970. In 1985, TVA merged with Gulf Coast Barge Lines to form Gulf Coast Energy Corporation. In 1990, Gulf Coast Energy Corporation merged with American Transmission Co., which became Delta Power Company Incorporatedd subsidiaries of Southern Company plc.; Delta Power then acquired Alliant Energy Resources Incorporated as its wholly owned subsidiary The town has seen some construction activity over the years: a library was built in 1949 and enlarged several times over; a fire station was constructed in 1976; and two churches were built: One erected in 1984 and another erected in 2006. There have been few major changes to either the infrastructure or the demographics of Meridian since its establishment as a small town more than 100 years ago
Meridian was founded by General James K. Polk in 1836 as a slave trading post on the Red River. It became an important port for the cotton and other goods being shipped down the Mississippi River. The town grew rapidly, and in 1857 it incorporated as a city. In 1916, Meridian was renamed for Morehouse College president Dr. John A. Morehouse Jr., following his donation of land to the city.
