John A. McComb and his family upon land bought from the Chickasaw Nation. The town grew rapidly due to its strategic location on the Yazoo River and its access to railroad transportation. In 1902, Mccomb became a city when it merged with nearby Tupelo and other towns in Harrison County. Mccomb has experienced several setbacks throughout its history including being burned down twice during the American Civil War; experiencing a wide variety of economic hardships during Reconstruction; and finally becoming an agricultural center after World War II until it lost most of its businesses to suburbanization and mechanization. Mccomb is a town in Hancock County, Mississippi, United States. The population was 1,564 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Jackson metropolitan area. Mccomb was founded by Scots-Irish immigrants in 1824 as a Methodist center for the surrounding territory. The name "McComb" suggests that the town's founders were Presbyterian missionaries led by Rev. John McCombs, who arrived from Scotland in 1824 and first preached to Native Americans on the Great Lakes region before moving on to Mississippi River Delta plantations. In 1830, McCombs established a seminary here which became known as Cumberland Seminary (now Univeristy of Mississippi). In 1838, when Indian leaders Henry Hance and Andrew Kapp raided white settlements near present day Hattiesburg, Mississippians willing or able to fight volunteered to lead an army against them and drove them back across the river into Illinois Territory. General James Fenton dispatched 2nd Ulysses S. Grant with 6 companies of cavalry and 3 battalions of infantry to take care of these Indians while he marched northward via Mobile Bay to Mansfield Landing on San Jacinto River where he joined up with General Scott's forces under General Don Carlos Hill. After skirmishing near Corinth (Mississippi),the Battle of Resaca de la Palma took place on April 19th 1861 as Union troops under Colonel John Pemberton tried to march northeast towards Jackson under cover of darkness en route to safety after being repulsed at Third Manassas Junction (now Richmond Heights). A combined Confederate force commanded by Robert Ewing attacked Pemberton's column during nightfall but was driven off without loss; this ended any hope North expansionists may have had of achieving success against Sherman's forces advancing southward from Memphis through Arkansas Valley toward Nashville.). It became part of Butte County in 1841. The first post office was established here in 1845. Mccomb was named after Colonel James A. McCombs, a Confederate officer who served as Butler's adjutant general during the American Civil War. The McCombs depot on US 66 serve as the primary commercial center for the community until it closed in the early 1990s when Interstate 20 bypassed it. Mccomb now functions as an agricultural outpost located about east of Jackson on US 82/59A providing access to nearby cornfields and soybean production facilities.
