Mccomb, Mississippi is a small town in the state of Mississippi. The population was 7,711 at the 2000 census. The area includes McComb and parts of Logan and Richland counties. It is part of the Jackson metropolitan area. The courthouse in McComb serves as the seat for both the county government and district court. The first white settlers in what is now McComb were Hugh McCullough and his family who arrived on July 4, 1814. In 1827, James Ladd purchased 1,200 acres (500 ha) of land from John Fitch for $1 per acre. In 1840, Asahel Gibbs bought another 200 acres (500 ha). By 1850, all land in present-day McComb had been acquired by whites. In 1871, Aiken County was created from portions of Logan and Richland counties; it included much of what is now McComb township except for a small piece that became part of Richland County east of I-10 just south of exit 131A known as "the gap." Richardson built a sawmill on this tract which became known as "Richardson's Mill". At this time there were only three churches in present-day McComb: First Baptist Church (1872), Second Baptist Church (1892), and Methodist Episcopal Church (1901).
