Mccomb, Mississippi is a town in Hancock County, Mississippi, United States. The population was 589 at the 2010 census. It is part of Jackson, Mississippi. The first white person to live in McComb was John A. McClung who arrived in 1819 and built a log cabin on the banks of the Muscogee River. McClung's cabin served as a trading post for many years before he moved away and did not return to McComb until after the American Civil War. He again visited in 1884 when he came to sell wood from his business on Mill Road near present-day downtown McComb. In 1892, James Bancroft settled in what is now McComb and began farming land around what is now Main Street and Hickory Avenue (now US 81). In 1904, Bancroft donated land along I-10 South to the city of Jackson for use as an airport. The airport opened in 1924 and today it is one ofJackson's primary commercial attractions. McComb was once known as "The Cotton City." In 1865, General Robert E Grant spent time here while campaigning for president; he found abundance of cotton at nearby Meridian so decided to move all Ulysses S Grant's supplies east into Tennessee instead of risking possible attack by Confederate forces operating from within Union territory (the Trans-Mississippi Valley Campaign). In 1902, Grover Cleveland became the first Ulysses S Grant presidency; when he took office, there were only 10 towns in Mississippi with over 1,000 residents according to the 1910 census - only two were located within current Hancock County: McCombsville (population 589) and Corinth (population 612). By 1920s standard Mississippian had come up with code name "Red Wing" for most small towns east of Memphis due to their similarity thereto - this being done because they had been founded during Reconstruction period following civil war that saw heavy African American migration into newly freed states such as Mississippi which then suffered high levels of economic inequality & social unrest caused by lack of education & job opportunities among former slaves/migrants
