Mccomb, Mississippi is a town located in Rankin County, Mississippi. The population was 5,521 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Rankin County. Mccomb was originally named for Colonel John Mccombs (1807-1864), an American general who fought in the Mexican-American War and who later became Supreme Court justice. In 1872, Colonel John Mccombs donated land to build a public school in Mccomb and named it after him. The first high school in McComb opened in 1884. On November 11, 1907, the Mississippi Legislature passed a bill authorizing the erection of a state park within five miles of McComb. The park was founded on December 1, 1907 by Governor James Fenton Hogg.

Mccomb, Mississippi is a city in Gulf County, Mississippi, United States. The population was 11,564 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Gulf County. The city was founded by General James K. Polk in 1836 as a small town named for his uncle, Robert McComb (1796-1858), an officer in the Mexican–American War and secretary of war under Polk's predecessor Ulysses S. Grant. The first post office in McComb was established on April Fool's Day, 1836, by order of then-Secretary of War James K. Polk. In 1871, the post office moved from Gadsden to McComb because of floods that had destroyed Gadsden and other towns along the Alabama River near Jacksonport; when McCombsville became too flooded to be livable again they relocated there also and renamed it after him. In 1902, a new courthouse replaced an earlier one burned down by Confederate forces during the Civil War. It is still used today as the court house for Gulf County and is known formally as "The General Sessions Court House" or "Gulf County Courthouse." The old courthouse was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1993. Mccombsville Landing is located on US 1 just south of McCombsville and offers views over Mobile Bay towards Baldwin Head Light Station offshore which can be seen from downtown McCombsville proper as well as eastward towards Pearl Harbor in Mobile Bay using binoculars or good telescope magnification! This landing offers easy access to all sorts of shells found off shore including beachcombing finds!
