Mccomb, Mississippi is a small town in Jackson County, Mississippi. The population was 1,711 at the 2010 census. Mccomb began as a log cabin on the banks of the Yazoo River. The first white person to live in McComb was Dr. John Skees who settled there in 1824. In 1828, General Andrew Jackson and his army stopped at McCombs Ferry on their way to Cairo, Egypt. General Jackson ordered all supplies brought overland from Mobile so he could avoid being dependent on Middle Eastern merchants for food and weapons. This event is often considered the beginning of the end for Indian removal policy in America. In 1830, John Skees sold his land to James Fenton and his family became owners of what is now known as McCombs Landing Cove or "The Point." In 1836, Colonel Nathaniel Butterfield founded an academy here which still exists today as Sanders College. The area around McCombs Landing Cove was used by slaveholders for cotton plantations until after Reconstruction when it became available for development as rural Johnson County began to grow up around it. By 1920, the population of McCombs had grown to over 6,000 people and included both blacks and whites living together in integrated neighborhoods called "The Ghetto". On July 14th 1930, three African American men were driving a truck full of groceries into town when they were met by Ku Klux Klan members who pelted them with rocks and set their car on fire before fleeing without taking any money or goods from them

Mccomb began as a small community on the banks of the Missouri River and became an important cotton center in the antebellum period. It was also known for its production of moccasin shoes. The town was founded by Samuel McCoy in 1836 and named for him. McCoy sold fertile land along the Missouri River to John Jacob Astor for $2 million in 1837. Astor built a plantation there called "Astoria" and imported slaves to work his plantations. In 1840, when Confederate forces invaded Mississippi, they captured McComb and burned it down. Mccomb replaced Jackson as the primary cotton center of Mississippi during Reconstruction. Afterward, it declined rapidly due to increased competition from Jackson's new city of Jackson and other towns within neighboring counties. In 2007, McComb passed away at age 95 years old after having been ill since 2006.
