Mccomb is a town in the Yazoo County, Mississippi., United States. The population was 1,527 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Jackson, Mississippi Metropolitan Statistical Area. The name comes from James Fenton McComb, an American politician who served as mayor of Jackson from 1951 to 1959 and as a U.S. Representative from 1967 to 1979. Mccomb was founded in 1836 by Andrew Fleming and others who arrived on the "Ole Miss" slave ship that brought freed slaves to America. Mccomb became a log town and saw only one crop per year until 1840 when a irrigation canal was built providing water for cotton plantations in nearby Meridian and Vicksburg. The town grew rapidly after Union General John Custer burned Meridian on July 14, 1864 during his campaign against Confederate General Robert Ewell on what is now known as McCombs Mill Road east of downtown Jackson. With cotton prices high due to abundant supplies coming in from states such as Texas, cotton mills were built throughout the area with people working long hours assembling bales of cloth into sacks or selling them at local markets

Mccomb, Mississippi is a small town located in Jackson County, Mississippi. The population of McComb was 5,500 at the 2010 census. In 1821, the first permanent settler in what is now McComb was John Hillyer. He and his family moved to this area from Allendale County, Alabama. When the U.S. government acquired land west of Mobile Bay for the new District of Columbia in 1824, it selected McComb as one of its six towns receiving land under the General Land Office Act of 1825. The town site was chosen because it lay on a bend in a river that could be easily drained and improved for agriculture by means of canals and ditches. The first store opened in McComb about 1830 by Jno Aiken (a whitesmith). Aiken built a log cabin near present-day Main Street and Indian Road on what is now owned by Eastern Kentucky University (EKU). He later sold his interest in the business to John Huffman Jr., who operated it until 1851 when it went into foreclosure due to debt troubles. In 1831, David Sprague established an early cotton gin hereabouts which became known as Sprague's Mill after him. Sprague also served as Mayor of McComb from 1840 to1841 and again from 1852 to1854; he was also Postmaster from 1840 to1851 and again from 1857 to 1861; he was elected sheriff twice during those years but never took office because he died before taking office each time. McCombsville Methodist Church was organized on December 3, 1830 by Revs George Hawkins (bishop) and Wm Hoggum (deacon). Reverend Hawkins preached there for two years before moving eastward to become pastor at Ebenezer Methodist Church near Clarksdale, Arkansas; following Rev Hawkins' death in January 18 31st year (1833), Wm Hoggum assumed leadership over Ebenezer Chapel until his own death on March 1st year (1835) due largely to economic problems within that church faction led by Elder William Cokerhurst alias “Cobb” - after whom that part of town subsequently got its name.. At Mr Hoggums death noone claimed ownership or control over Ebenezer Chapel so it continued functioning as an independent chapel until 1862 when Union troops burned all but one building including Mrs Hoggums home during their occupation.. When Confederate forces occupied Mobile late summer 1861 they burned down both churches with few exceptions among defenders who were able to flee before capture.. After Union victoryOverland Campaign October 20-24 1861 most old buildings were destroyed except Mrs Hoggums home which still stands today adjacent US ferris wheel
Mccomb, Mississippi is a town in Jackson County, Mississippi, United States. The population was 3,541 at the 2010 census. The first white person to live in McComb was James Fenton who arrived there in 1814. He built a cabin on the banks of the Yazoo River. In 1830, John Dickson purchased land east of McComb from Fenton and began to cultivate it. Dickson's son John Dickson II started a gristmill in 1836 and founded the town of McComb around that time. The first post office was established in 1839. In 1865, Confederate General Robert Ewell moved his army into Jackson County and headquarters were located at McComb until he evacuated following Union victory over him at Gettysburg. Mccombs early economy revolved around agriculture with smallscale stores and services providing goods and services to local farmers until the development of large industrial mills during World War I caused most residents to leave their homes for work opportunities elsewhere. Migration resumed after World War II as oil exploration increased production throughout the Delta region; however, many people remain entrenched within the community today due to its history and culture
