Mccomb is a town in Mississippi, United States. It was founded in 1819 by the Methodist Episcopal Church and named for Rev. John Mccomb, an early missionary to the area. The community grew rapidly during the late 19th century due to its location on the banks of the Pearl River and its proximity to cotton plantations. In 1925, McComb became a city and has since grown into one of the most populous towns in Mississippi.
Mccomb, Mississippi is a small town located in the eastern portion of the U.S. state of Mississippi. The population was 5,527 at the 2010 census. It is part of Jackson County. As of the 2010 census, the racial makeup of McComb was 98% white and 1% black. The first European settler in McComb was Nicholas Biddle who arrived in 1814 from Maryland and named his new land "Mccombsboro." Mccombsboro became a community because both Methodists and Baptists were based there and services were held twice a week at an adjacent church called First Presbyterian Church in what is today's town square. There were no schools until 1832 when one was built on Main Street by Reverend James Sennett, pastor of First Presbyterian Church. In 1836, Mccombsboro had two stores, four churches (First Presbyterian with its own school), three residences and 100 acres (40 hectares). The Methodist Episcopal Church built its third church on Fourth Street in 1852 which served as their HQ until it burned down in 1906; that building still stands as part of Baptist Central United Methodist Church today. In 1875-76 a group of men under contract from A&P grocery store owner John Kirby bought 640 acres (248 hectares) east of downtown McComb for $2 million dollars to create what would become known as Kirby Field State Park - now home to numerous golf courses, casinos and other businesses including BJ's restaurant chain headquarters since its opening in 1991.
