Today's McCombs are a mix of Irish Americans and African Americans who emigrated during the late 19th century as sharecroppers or farmers. There has been little change since then – most members of the community still speak Irish as their first language and observe traditional Christmas celebrations including eggnog drinking and caroling on New Year's Eve.

Mccomb, Mississippi is a town in Lamar County, Mississippi, United States. The population was 2,089 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Jackson metropolitan area. The townsite that would become McComb was first set off by a group of Mississippians in 1871 when they bought land from David Dickey. They named their new settlement "McComb" after Major General William J. McCombs who had led cavalry campaigns against the Seminole Indians and helped to make West Point possible. The town was platted out in 1872 by a group of local farmers and businessmen under the name of "Denton". In 1907, McComb became one of the initial townships within Jackson Township when it was organized as a result of a merger of several smaller communities within Lamar County. The township has remained an unchanged entity since then with its own government and school system - something that is not generally true for most Jackson municipalities which have undergone annexation or other changes during their time as separate municipalities. Mccomb's history goes back to before there were any buildings anywhere near where it stands today. People lived on farms here from long before white people arrived in what is nowMississippi Territory (the present day United States). Indian raids and violence took their toll on these early settlers; even though they managed to survive, many left for good because of fear for their lives and property. One man who did stay behind however, was Isaac McCoy who started a small grocery store just east of town along US Highway 82 in 1881-82. His store soon became one of the major providers of foodstuff and goods needed by those living in this remote outpost on the edge of what would later be known as Mississippi Territory. In 1916-17 General Wesley Clark visited McComb while he was campaigning for president; his visit made such an impression upon Sheriff John Wirtz that he decided to move his post office into downtown McCombs instead of continuing to operate out front where hazards posed including theft by criminals looking for easy marksmanship opportunities against soldiers quartered nearby at Camp Chase (later Fort Chilton). That same year also saw the opening up – or rather testing –of Jackson’s first oil well; this event forever changed both business activity and social life in this little frontier community which sat athwart what would eventually become I-10%. In 1924 MCCOMB COLLEGE WAS OPENED BY MISSISSIPPI STATE UNIVERSITY AS A FACULTY SCHOOL OF EDUCATION UNDER THE DIRECTION OF ARTHUR KNOXBLUE UNIFORMALLY WITH AN ALL BLACK STAFF IN RESPONSE TO THE WHITE PUBLIC SCHOOLS THEN PRESENTING A FALSE PREMIERSHIP TO HISTORY IN MISSISSIPPI AND ITS CONNECTION TO THE BLACK COMMUNITY! In recent years much progress has been made both physically & mentally within & around MCCOMB BUT MUCH MORE MUST BE done if we are going to continue making headway towards building A Better future FOR ALL!
In 1872, John F. Mccomb patented a system for cultivating cotton with a rotary implement. The project was completed in 1875 and became known as the "Mccomb Cotton gin". In 1912, the town of McComb was established by commissioners from Jackson County to serve as a county seat for the newly formed Mississippi Territory. It was here that the first oil well in Mississippi was drilled in 1901.
