Mccomb, Mississippi was first settled in 1821 by Captain James A. Cobb and his family. The town initially consisted of a single cabin and grows gradually as more people settle in. In 1836, the town had a population of 100 and by 1840 it had increased to 350. By 1865, the population had reached 1,500 and by 1870 it was 4,000. After several years of growth, the town voted to secede from Mississippi in 1871. The secession did not succeed however and McComb remained part of the state until 1923 when it became an independent city. The economy of McComb is heavily based on agriculture with some manufacturing also being conducted here.
