The first settler in McComb was James Waddell and his family who came from Kentucky in 1814. In 1836, Andrew Johnson became President of the United States and he appointed James K. Polk as his Secretary of Agriculture which led to an increase in agricultural production in Mississippi due to increased importation from Canada. This also led to a rise in prices for goods exported from Mississippi because of higher transportation costs associated with reaching Illinois via steamboats instead of sailing across the ocean or wagons. One significant event that occurred during this time period was the Battle of Mobile Bay which resulted in General Andrew Jackson’s victory over Confederate forces under General Braxton Bragg.
