Mccomb, Mississippi is a town in Hinds County, Mississippi. The population was 2,811 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Jackson metropolitan area. Mccomb is named for General James W. McComb, who served as the superintendent of Indian Affairs for much of the 20th century. The first settlers in what would become Mccomb were farmers and their families who arrived in 1853 from Georgia. They did not have any horses so they built a dam on Buffalo Bayou to collect water from the creek and brought it to their homes by wagon. After a few years of this, they decided to build a store and market place on what is now State Street in order to sell their goods more easily to other farmers and travelers going through town. The first post office was established in 1859 with two officials serving day and night shifts respectively. In 1861 General James W. McCombs campaign against Confederate General Robert Eaddy resulted in his capture by Union troops near here on October 25th at Bridgeport Landing which cut off all communication between Confederate-held Hinds County and Johnson County down into Mobile Bayous where Fort Sumter was located at that time

McCombs, a U.S. Representative from Tennessee who had moved to Stark County to farm.[1] In 1881, the community became an incorporated village when its residents voted to do so. Its first postmaster was Wm Henson.[2] A cotton gin and mill were built in 1886 and 1907 respectively; both failed within a few years due to competition from mills in nearby Jackson. In 1915, the railroad reached Mccomb and began service providing transportation for farmers to market their crops; this led to increased demand for goods and services available in town.[3] The population then began growing rapidly as waves of new immigrants settled here during World War II (most notably Japanese American soldiers) and after the war.[4][5] The Central High School campus opened in 1959,[6][7] one of several high schools operated by Gulfport-based Gulfport Junior College which merged with Mississippi State University in 1983[8][9][10]. In 2001, McCombs Consolidated School District was created from portions of Gulfport-based McCombs Independent School District[11]. That same year saw the opening of Mccombs International Airport south of town on US 11/12 just east of I-20 exit 191B – becoming only the second airport within Stark County after Clinton Municipal Airport near Clinton (served by Delta Airlines).[12] Mccombs is home to many local businesses such as J&J's Bakery which has been open since 1903,[13][14], Patton's BBQ which opened in 1984,[15], Patsy's Pizza located at 6335 US 11/12 across from I-20 exit 191B,[16][17], [18],[19],[20], Big Joe's Restaurant located at 419 Main Street opposite Patton's BBQ,[21],[22],[23], First Baptist Church located at 601 E 4th St., just off US 11/12 north of downtown[24]; All Saints Episcopal Church - served primarily by Roman Catholics - also operates out of McCombs;[25],[26]; and Scenic Drive Golf Links - a 9 hole golf course that opened July 5th 2006 adjacent to First Baptist Church.[27]; all these businesses are part of what makes up "McComb."[28]
