Mccomb, Mississippi is a town in Jackson County, Mississippi, United States. The population was 2,846 at the 2010 census. The town was named for General James A. McComb and his wife Julia B. (née Cobb). It is part of the Jackson metropolitan area. The first white settler in McComb was John Aiken who arrived in 1824. In 1830, General James McCombs settled here with his family from Tennessee. He became one of the most powerful men in Jackson County after he bought land from the Chickasaw nation and built a store and home on State Street in 1835. He served as justice of the peace and sheriff from 1841 to 1850; he also served as mayor of McComb from 1840 to 1845 and 1860 to 1865. In 1861, when Confederate forces burned down General McCombs' store, they destroyed almost all of his furniture including a library that still stands today at 601 Main Street near modern-day Interstate 25A (the former I-55). In 1865, General Robert Ewing took office as governor of Mississippi and ordered all Unionists out of the state except for those living east of Memphis or west of New Orleans; this order led to an exodus of many people inMcComb because it affected their businesses and homes too closely related to the Confederacy. Most residents joined forces with local Rebels until President Ulysses S Grant's April 14–16 raid on Corinth ended any remaining civil hostilities in Mississippi; then most citizens returned home within days or weeks following what had been called by some "the greatest military action ever undertaken by any American troops".[1] As a result, few physical reminders remain today about what happened during that skirmish just south of McComb.[2][3][4] Today little evidence remains anywhere within 1 mile (1 km) radius around downtown McCombsville that points to either major events or individual personalities associated with that time period – other than general stores open late into night nowdays housing items related Confederate memorabilia etcetera![5] However there are several old cotton plantations vernacular style homes located mostly off rural roads surrounded bywhite picket fences still standing which look back over those years while providing memories away from everyday life but right next door

McComb is home to the McComb National Battlefield and the old Union Pacific Railroad Depot. The first permanent settlers in what is now McComb were white men from North Carolina who arrived in 1824. They named their community after General James H. McCombs, an officer in the Confederate army during the American Civil War. A post office was established in 1828, and by 1830 it had grown to include a store and two homes. In 1837, a Methodist church was built on what is now Main Street; it served as the town's main settlement until 1840 when a new courthouse and jail were built. In 1853, slaveholders began buying up large tracts of land around McComb for cotton plantations; within ten years, most of present-day Jackson County had been acquired. Cotton cultivation became dominant early on in McComb's history; by 1860, nearly all of its residents worked for one or more masters. By 1870, however, race riots had broken out throughout America over questions of slavery and emancipation; while no slaves were killed or hurt in any of these disturbances in Jackson County (unlike many other Southern counties), several hundred black people did lose their lives as a result of violence or poverty caused by abolitionist activism. In 1865, following Reconstruction following the American Civil War (and with Reconstruction ended), Jackson County become part of newly formed Mississippi Territory under President Ulysses S Grant's administration. With its new status came increased opportunities for African Americans: starting in 1868 they were given voting rights and began to build churches and businesses across southern Mississippi like those found near Uniontown proper – but there remained much discrimination against them here among both whites and blacks alike stillexisting today into the 21st century In 1896–97 MCCOMB voted overwhelmingly not to ratify Grover Cleveland's New Deal program known as " Progressivism". This action helped spur economic development within that region which eventually led to its incorporation into modern day Mississippi
