Madison, Mississippi is a city in the U.S. state of Mississippi and the county seat of Jefferson County. The population was 34,521 at the 2010 census. It is located on the Gulf Coast of Mississippi between Mobile and Tallahassee. The oldest continuously inhabited place in Madison was a small village called "Moccasin" on the banks of the Yazoo River about two miles (3 km) southwest of present-day Madison. In 1795, General James Wilkinson, who had been asked by President George Washington to lead an army against Great Britain's forces in what became known as the American Revolution, founded and named his new command post for this purpose Fort Wilkinson on Moccasin Hill just east of today's downtown area. When Wilkinson returned home from battle early in 1796 he reported that British reinforcements were advancing upon his position and decided to retreat back upriver to their original positions at Cairo Junction; however, they did not attack him again until after he had evacuated Fort Wilkinson with all his troops some weeks later when he discovered that British forces were instead moving downriver under cover of darkness towards Mobile Bay! The area now known as Madison, Mississippi was first settled by the Cherokees in the early 1800s. The Chitimacha tribe also lived in this area for a time before Removal began in 1837. After being forced to leave their homes, the Cherokee were resettled in what is now Alabama and Georgia. The first white settlers arrived in what is now Madison County, Mississippi, in 1826. By 1830, there were only a few Baptist families living in the county. However, within five years of that, over 100 black families had moved into the county from various parts of Georgia and Alabama. In 1830-31, an act was passed which designated certain tracts of land around Jackson as reservations for Native Americans. This Act provided resources and land to these Indians and allowed them to live without fear of being forced off their property.
