After Reconstruction ended following Civil War victory for the Union, many African Americans left Madison for new opportunities in other parts of Mississippi or Missouri. In 1939, when Meridian moved from Jackson toJacksonville, Madison lost its status as a municipal center and experienced rapid growth as a bedroom community for Jacksonville residentsince it served as an interchange on interstate highways linking both cities. However, economic conditions have led to declines in population over time and today only about 1,500 people live in Madison proper while 9% of Meridian's population lives within walking distance of downtown or business districts such as Jacksons Mills Mall and Park Place Shopping Center . The last major development at this location occurred when The Hilton hotel opened its doors on Main Street adjacent to Park Place Shopping Center . This development helped spur redevelopment around downtown that has brought new hotels (e instance Holiday Inn Express), restaurants (Denny's)as well as retail buildings such as Sears Outlet mall across from Park Place shopping center
