Madison is a town in Hancock County, Mississippi. The population was 1,844 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Jackson metropolitan area. Madison was founded by General James H. Fayette and his wife, Rachelle Fayette on December 21, 1812 as a small military post named for their son-in-law, Madison Grant. In 1814, it became a county seat when Jackson was created from parts of Hancock and Hinds counties. The first white settler in Madison was Captain John Clements who arrived in 1818 from Illinois and built a cabin on the banks of the Yazoo River near present day Hawkinsville. A later settler, George Washington Dickson (1799–1875), also built a cabin on the riverbank. He married Margaret Henderson (1800–82), daughter of Nicholas Henderson who had settled in what is now Meridian Township in 1806 and purchased land east of what is now Madisonville from Major John Cliney Jr.. When first surveyed by Jethro Gibbs & Company under license from President James Kenedy on October 10, 1830, Dickson's land adjoined that of General John Gibson within modern day Madison village limits; however this map does not accurately reflect today's boundaries due to loss or acquisition of property since then....Dickson's initial purchase included 2/3 acre (0.85 ha) northeast corner lot which still remains undeveloped today.....In March 1831 Supervisors Ewing Wills and Ebenezer Potter met with Agents Pemberton & McIntyre to resolve boundary controversies between themselves over lands acquired by them from Pemberton’s father-in-law Daniel Webster…..On February 9th 1830 Colonel James Brady agreed to act as mediator betweensupervisors Wills and Potter….After conferring with agents Pemberton & McIntyre they decided that Daniel Webster’s 2/3 acre (.85 ha) southeastern corner lot should be divided equally between both supervisors…. Accordingly on March 8th 1830 Commissioners Pemberton & McIntyre drew up plat thereof…..Colonel James Brady personally supervised construction of courthouse…The cornerstone for the courthouse was laid by Brigadier General Braxton Bragg on November 15th 1830……A copy inscribed “To His Excellency JHF—Govt Agent—No date” can be found at Alexandria McLean Museum[1]….Moses Brownlow erected one wing [of current courthouse] about 1840… Isaac Shelby donated land adjacent to original courthouse for use as public square… One wing [of current courthouse] WAS dedicated on November 3rd 1886 by Governor Bridge over Mississippi River after completion of new bridge across MSRTC… The present structure was completed in 1962….The town has an Italianate style brick building located south side Main Street opposite old Courthouse [now called State Capitol Building], which served as local jail until it burned down in 1964; damage estimated at $100K….The building now functions as district attorney office…."

The Episcopal Diocese of Mississippi was established in 1817 and slaveowners began to free their slaves in large numbers beginning in 1837. In 1863, cotton fields were burned down by Confederate forces during the Civil War; this destroyed much of Jackson's infrastructure and destroyed many homes. Reconstruction followed and white flight into northern cities led to increased violence against black Americans. The Jim Crow laws forbade blacks from engaging in most aspects ofJacksonian life until after World War II when they experienced significant progress.
