Long Beach, Mississippi is a small town in the US state of Mississippi. It is located in Rapides County and has a population of about 1,100 people. The town was founded in 1884 by brothers Ambrose and George Long. The original settlers were farmers who grew corn, cotton, and other crops. The Long family moved to Long Beach from Tupelo, Mississippi in 1893. They built a barn and began to sell goods out of their home. In 1896 the Longs bought property north of the town on what is now State Route 256. They continued to operate their store until they sold it in 1922 to Jack Laddington. Laddington built the first school in Long Beach, which was called East High School until 1954 when it became South High School. He also built a church and added a public library to the community. After Laddington's death in 1962, his wife Betty took over operations of the store and library until her death in 1984. In 1990 Long Beach Community Foundation Incorporated was formed with Betty's widow as its first president; she served until her death in 2002). The town of Long Beach grew rapidly during the late 1800s and early 1900s due to its location on the Gulf of Mexico and its easy access to goods and passengers traveling along the Mississippi River. By 1920, Long Beach had a population of over 1,500 people and it became an important stop on the Memphis-Kansas City Railroad. During World War II, Long Beach served as a military training ground for soldiers from both sides of the conflict.
