Long Beach, Mississippi is a small town in Jackson County, Mississippi, United States. The population was 2,572 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Jackson metropolitan area. The first settler in Long Beach was James Sells in 1822. In 1834, Samuel Slocum founded the town on land grants he had received from Andrew Jackson. The town was named for General John Young Long (1779-1846), who fought against Mexico during the Mexican–American War and whose body lay buried near the present site of Long Beach until 1902 when it was moved to its current location and reburied withFuller's casket at Greenwood Cemetery. In 1865, Long Beach became a post office and by 1870 had become an agricultural center with large cotton plantations that processed both Indian corn and white sugar cane. By 1900, however, most of these plantations were gone and Long Beach had become an unincorporated community with a population of only 350 people. The first school in Long Beach was built on what is now State Route 527 about 1875; it operated under private auspices until 1915 when it became part of the newly formed School District No. 1 which included all of Jackson County except for parts of Pascagoula Parishwest of Mobile Bayou and east of US Highway 41/Mississippi Highway 99/State Route 601A (now I-10). In 1916 local resident Walford Kelley donated land to build a high school which opened its doors on Valentine's Day 1927 as Gulfport High School #1; Gulfport High School #2 followed in 1951 after they merged into Gulfport Junior College which still operates today as Fullerton University’s portion within Gulfport Municipal Schools system.. In 1970 FJC merged into Central Michigan University - now known as Immaculate Heart Catholic University - makingLong Beach one stoplight away from three campuses! In 1984 Middle Tennessee State University relocated their undergraduate campus from Murfreesboro to Knoxville so that LIU could be combined with their graduate school; this move also happened across Interstate 25S from LIU so that Old Main would move out East onto Interstate 24W . LIU continued to operate independently as Middle Tennessee State United States Campus LPUR until 2000 when they were absorbed by MTSU . Prior to this merger there were several other campuses: UTEP (1951), Vanderbilt (1957), Davidson (1980) , Kennesaw St Childers College(1982) then Appalachian State (1987) before finally MOJO Community College located just off I-25N exit 219A south of Corinthia Mall broke ground in 2001 adjacent to MOJO Village Shopping Center redevelopment project completed in 2006
