Long Beach, Mississippi was founded on August 28, 1853 as a post office by J.D. Long and others. The community was named for the longitude of its location - 139 degrees 3 minutes north latitude - which is about midway between Mobile and Jackson, Mississippi. In 1872, the town's first school was opened in a log cabin. In 1892, a $5,000 donation from railroad magnate James Giddings helped build the first public school in Long Beach. The building still stands and serves as the town's main library today. In 1905, Long Beach became an incorporated city under the name of Jacksonport after it joined the Mississippi Union Railroad system. By 1907, however, Jacksonport had become too small for its population and was merged into Long Beach; this merger also included neighboring Plantation Heights and Harbor Springs. The 1930s were a time of great change for Long Beach with changes to both its political landscape and economy brought about by new transportation methods such as automobiles and air travel. In 1935-1936, Hurricane Hattie destroyed many homes in northeastern Mississippi due to strong winds gusts up to 185 mph (300 km/h). A number of residents decided to remain in their homes throughout the storm while others evacuated to points north or south of their townships; all told, some 1,500 people lost their lives in Hattie’s devastating rampage across northeastern Mississippi. Following World War II,[1] Long Beach experienced rapid growth thanks to maritime trade with Gulf ports along the Mobile Bay region.[2] However, during this time much economic development took place outside of downtownLong Beach because there were few if any opportunities for businesses within walking distance of most residences.[3][4][5] As early as 1951,[6] plans were underway to construct a bypass freeway through downtown which would have severed local access to downtown merchants while increasing traffic congestion on Main Street.[7][8] Despite Brinkley County commissioners' objections[9], construction began on November 15th 1953 despite objections from Mayor Tom Ritchie who felt that allowing freeways through his city would cause crime rates among young people living near central business districts to skyrocket[10]. Mayor Ritchie later explained that he "knew better than anyone what could happen when we built that freeway" – although it did little to improve traffic congestion on main street over time[11]: instead it caused problems for pedestrians attempting Toomey Boulevard (now I-10) due to increased truck traffic leading up ramps from I-10 onto Main Street: at one point trucks were being stalled at intersections just feet away from busy storefronts![12]: one observer wrote years later: "If you want an example of how easy it is for big box stores like Walmart [to open up shop next door]- look no further than Downtown Jacksonville during those days...you couldn't walk two blocks without coming across someone setting up shop."[13][14][15]: indeed during this period many small businesses simply folded or closed their doors because they didn't have enough money$$$ needed matching funds fromWalmart lobbyists$$$. This lack of opportunity drove some entrepreneurs out into other neighborhoods such as Brookhaven where they set up shopromptu marketplaces known as 'ghetto markets'.
