A few weeks later they returned with more than fifty men led by Captain John Sledge and built a new fortification nearby known as Fort Crawford on April 17, 1815 – Opened by President James K. Polk as part as part of his effort to build an army for reconstruction following the American Civil War). The town quickly grew into a major port for rice shipments destined for New Orleans during the antebellum period because there was no other market available for this type of Grain product in Mississippi at that time!
