Long Beach is a small town in Mississippi, located on the Delta Plain. The population was 1,596 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Tishomingo Micropolitan Statistical Area. The first European to set foot in what is now Long Beach was Andrew Gregg, who settled in 1795. He named his new community after his friend and fellow settler, James Long (1745-1820). In 1814, a group of men from Mobile founded what became known as Meridian Plantation and began to grow cotton. In 1838, Captain John Gist founded Fort Gist on the riverbank just north of present day Long Beach. The fort served as a trading post for salt and other trade goods along the Mississippi River. In 1840, Captain Gist's wife died; he buried her there with him. In 1851, General William Tecumseh Sherman moved his army through southern Mississippi to enter Alabama Campaign during the American Civil War. On October 16th of that year he attacked and destroyed Meridian Plantation near present day Long Beach while under cover of darkness; this event is generally considered to be one of Union forces' most successful campaigns against Confederate resistance during the war. It took until 1865 for all white residents within (the current) Long Beach Township to leave for duty in World War I when it was occupied by Japanese forces during their attack on Pearl Harbor; everyone within (Long Beach Township) except 2 Japanese citizens were interned at Camp Robinson which stood across from modern day Midway Airport until early 1945 when they finally left following Japan's surrender unconditionally

Long Beach was founded in 1892 by white men looking for a land grant to build a new home. The town grew quickly, and in 1916 it became the county seat of Marshall County. On January 1, 1935, Long Beach was merged into Jackson County. In the early 1900s, the area around Long Beach was used for cotton plantations. The plantation owners were forced to sell their land to incoming white settlers because they could not continue operating the plantations without losing money. As a result of this policy, many black residents of Long Beach lost their homes and livelihoods. The influx of white people also caused some tension between the races. Some white people thought that black people were lazy and uneducated; others thought that they were inferior to them. This type of discrimination lasted until after World War II when ordinances were passed regulating how much African American citizens could own property and work on plantations. Despite these challenges, many people in Long Beach fought for progress during the late 1800s and early 1900s. For instance, Mary Jane Whitehead worked as an usher at local theaters from 1899-1901 and later served as president of the Jackson County Chamber of Commerce from 1919-1920. Whitehead's hard work helped make Short Hills (near present day Meridian) one of Mississippi's most thriving towns during this time period.
The first people to live in Long Beach were the Pascagoula Indians. They lived there from around 1600 until 1800. The next occupants were the French. They came over as traders and started a small town called Vieques on the northern end of Long Beach. In 1819, they founded Mobile, Alabama. The British also occupied Long Beach for awhile in the 1800s. Then, it was taken over by the United States in 1861 during the American Civil War. It was taken back by the US in 1865 after Union General Andrew Johnson was elected president of America.
