Long Beach is a city in Marshall County, Mississippi, United States. The population was 8,813 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Marshall County. The town was established in 1848 by General John Pemberton as a post office on the Yazoo River at its junction with what is now I-10 and US-71. The name "Long Beach" (from Spanish "longevilla") may be derived from that of nearby Venice, Italy. In 1851 Long Beach was incorporated as a village and in 1865 it became a town when it amalgamated with other villages in Marshall County. The first white settler to arrive here was George Hargrave in 1868. By 1870 Long Beach had over 100 residents and two churches; one Baptist and one Methodist. In 1907 an act of the Mississippi Legislature designated Long Beach as the county seat of Marshall County, effective July 1st of that year. On January 12th, 1908 Major League Baseball's Brooklyn Dodgers awarded their new stadium (then known as Dodger Stadium) to Marshall County for $2 million cash considerations only months before their opening season which started on April 12th against the Philadelphia Phillies; this event would forever be known as "the opener". In 1920 Long Beach merged with neighboring Venice to form one largest municipality in Mississippi with a population of about 60,000 people including Blacks and Whites living together side by side until 1955 when they were separated again by laws forbidding racial integration; however some suburbs have since annexed or been annexation into Long Beach while others have maintained independent status all these years despite seeking merger or incorporation into Long BEACH!

Long Beach, Mississippi is a town located in southern Jackson County, Mississippi. The population was 5,521 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Starkville–Oxford Micropolitan Statistical Area. The region that includes Long Beach began to be settled by Native Americans in the late 17th century. By 1800, it had a population of about 100 people. A post office was founded in 1824 and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1963. The first store on what is now Main Street was built by Mose Howland around 1830-1831. In 1837-38, Wm Fenton erected a log cabin which became known as "Fenton's Store" and served as an important stopping place for mail and passengers travelling between Oxford and Starkville during the early days of railroad travel through Jackson County. In 1851-52, two men named Hargrave bought land east of present day Main Street along the Alabama River from Aaron Saunders for $1 per acre (about $27 per sq km today). They named their plantation "Hargrave's Hope." The first crop grown there was corn, but soon they began to grow cotton and other crops; also purchased were additional acres north of original location within three years. In 1865-66 wagonloads of goods arrived at Hargrave's Hope from Corinth via Highway 65 after being hauled overland from Memphis by members of the Fourth Confederate Infantry Regiment under General Nathan Bedford Forrest. The townspeople were so pleased with this new addition to their community that they voted to name their new street "Forrest Avenue." After General Forrest’s death in 1870 his lieutenant Colonel John Buell organized a cavalry division under command of General James KNOX (later US Army Chiefof Staff) and advanced into central Mississippi., killing many Union troops including Long Beach’s postmaster William Purdy who had been transporting food supplies to Corinth on horseback when he was killed near Bridgeport Dam on October 11th 1870 while leading a detachment numbering twenty nine men against Buell’s forces fifteen miles south of Corinth.. This event marked one time when white people fought black people outside the boundaries set forth by Reconstruction policies mandated by Congress following America’s civil war.... AfterGeneral Buell withdrew his army from central Mississippi he ordered Purdy not to continue carrying food supplies directly into Corinth but instead call upon friends among local farmers who would do soemail pickups... This incident has been variously interpreted as an act Of Heroism orPolite Proteanbehavior By Postmaster Purdy To Retain His Place In Community Or As An Incident That Led To Dissatisfaction Of White Residents With Black Personnel employed In Town
