Long Beach was founded on December 3, 1853 by James W. Long and his wife, Eliza G. Long. The first post office in the town was established in 1855. In 1947, Long Beach became Mississippi's second-largest city after Jackson with a population of over 10,000 people In 1964 Long Beach merged with Jackson to form one large city called Jackson-Long Beach which still exists today as its own municipality within Mississippi’s state government The history of downtown Jackson starts before that time however as part of what is now known as Old Spanish Harlem development area which included parts of what is now known as Downtown Jackson Downtown Jacksonville started out small but quickly grew into one of the most influential areas in allJackson County due to its location at what was then known as Dutchtown Landing along State Road A1A (now I-95) The original white settlers who came to this area were Moses Austin and his family who cleared land for farming around 1790 or thereabouts By 1830 or so they’d reworked their plans slightly changing their name to Musgrove Settlement Creek Company which served primarily Native Americansrather than whites during that early period some native men also did some mercantile pursuits such as tanning hides while others farmed sugar cane although no cotton operations were ever established although later white settlement did occur including by J & C White timber merchants who set up mills on Big Muddy River beginning about 1840 prior to that date blacksmithing having been done mainly by slaves until 1863 when free blacks began arriving here from Alabama following emancipation many working at various jobs related either directly or indirectly to slave work including sawmills furriers building homes (orchards being among them), bricklayers plantation workers picking apples etcetera Although not all blacks worked Agricultural labor only about 20% Blacks worked here during those years really meaning most black laborers were used for domestic purposes rather than doing any real heavy lifting outside especially since much slave labor went into construction/ Manufacturing etc back then agricultural work wasn't considered very productive since profits usually accrued not just unto owners but also overseers tenants etc typical slave owner treatment towards slaves resulted innear extinction these days among African Americans generally speaking although some managed somewhat successful escapes notwithstanding census reports indicating Negroes living mostly scattered around major urban areas throughout country well into recent times however long term physical custody remains almost exclusively with male descendants typically living near family estates particularly within jurisdictions where they reside legal authority remains vested primarily within families more often than not
