Long Beach is a town in southern Mississippi. It is the seat of Harrison County and was founded in 1876. The population of Long Beach was 10,827 at the 2010 census. Smith during Reconstruction Periods in Mississippi. The post served as a supply stop for soldiers returning from Reconstruction efforts in Georgia and Alabama. In 1905, Long Beach became an incorporated municipality with a population of 714 residents; it had been part of Jackson County since its creation in 1851. The city Limits were increased to 8 square miles (20 km²) by annexing unincorporated areas located east and northwest of its limits: Baldwin Township to the south, Spanish Fort to the north, and New Hope to the west. The growth of Long Beach caused Jackson County officials to consider annexing it into Jackson County rather than continue supporting its separate government; however, this proposal was vetoed by then-Governor William Ladd because he felt that annexation would simply result in more taxes being levied on Long Beach residents while reducing their access to education and other essential services. Ladd instead offered financial assistance to help build new schools in Long Beach while also increasing funding for local government services such as public housing and libraries; these measures helpediona long beach's rapid growth over time. As late as 1978, Long Beach had an estimated population exceeding 12,000 people; however, this number decreased after several rounds of budget cuts which affected all levels of government throughout southeastern Mississippi including county governments which failed to meet required financial targets set forth by state legislators during recent decades). By 2000, only 604 residents remained within city boundaries; annexed Baldwin Township included much larger portions still within City Limits but no longer reported withinthose boundaries due largely to lack thereof interest or desire for resumption therein following years when streets were abandoned or re-paved amid heavy populations growth elsewhereabouts...Today there are only 295 inhabitants remaining within city boundaries through annexation from Baldwin Township & NO LONG BEACH within limits mentioned earlier
