Long Beach is a town in Hinds County, Mississippi, United States. The population was 8,445 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Jackson metropolitan area. The town was founded by white men in 1881 and named for Captain John Long Beach, an officer who fought in the Mexican-American War and later served as sheriff of Hinds County. The first post office in Long Beach was established on November 15, 1881, and remained open until it was discontinued on February 14, 1893. The present post office building was built in 1907 and is still in use today. In 1911, Long Beach became the second city in Mississippi to be incorporated; it did so because its citizens objected to the state's prohibition of liquor sales within city limits. The current mayor of Long Beach is William Jealous. In 1916–17, Long Beach participated with other townships – including Gulfport (then a separately incorporated town) – in creating the Mississippi Valley Civic Association to promote better public services within their boundaries. This group successfully lobbied for passage of the state constitution establishing statewide local government authority; this event helped make Long Beach one of six communities throughout Mississippi that ratified the new constitution that same year. In 1932–33, Mayor Jealous spearheaded a campaign to build a new library adjacent to Main Street; this project eventually resulted in the construction of what is now known as "the John Lennon Library." As part of efforts to reduce crime rates within his city limits since becoming mayoralty-holder in 2003, William Jealous has worked actively against organized crime activity both inside and outside of Long Beach proper - measures that have seen success over time despite occasional incidents which have drawn attention from law enforcement professionals nationwide.
