The men found no evidence to support these charges and returned home without making any arrests or reports to authorities. In 1837, as part of a larger effort to open up new territory for settlement in the Southeast United States, Mississippi offered 2,000 acres (800 hectares) of land east of Mobile Bay for purchase by anyone who could demonstrate political correctness and economic opportunity. After rejecting numerous offers from interested buyers due to its location near enoughMobileto be under military jurisdiction but not too closetoAlabama,,Mississippi appointed Jeptha Thayer as its commissioner resident overland with authorityover all Indian nations within their limitswestoftheMississippi RiverandeastoftheOklahoma Hillsuspectingthatthakingsocialdysfunctioning intotheIndian Countrywouldbeenducedbysuchamovement]. Thayer's specifications included creating roads and improvements necessary for transportation connections among plantations farther west; increasing cotton production; developing trade with Europe; improving relations with Native American nations; reducing competition among European settlers; providing education opportunities for Native Americans; resisting encroachment by African Americans). In response to this invitation., local businessmen set out on a buying spree which netted them more than two thousand acres (800 hectares) of land along Mobile Bay waterfronts adjacenttoThayer'svasitation area.– This acquisition constituted one half of what would become known as "Murphy County". A survey conducted by Captain John Smith during 1799–1800 indicated that there were only 10 families living on bayou Jemison (now called delta Smith River), out of an estimated 300+ families living along Mobile Bay at that time.– By 1800 only 21 families lived there permanently while 350+ others had moved ashore since 1799.– Thus it can be inferred that most residents migrated inland or away from bayou Jemison over time because it became difficult or impossible to maintain permanent residency there given both environmental factors (ease/hardiness ratings assigned by NOAA scientists resulted in high levelsOf flooding during hurricanes such as Katrina) AND social conditions (most family members left when food supplies dwindled & goods prices went up). Consequently much important historical information about early Long Beach survives through oral tradition and archaeological findings!

The city of Long Beach, Mississippi was founded in 1853 by James W. Easton and his wife Polly. The town was named for the long beach that extended along the shoreline. The first store in town opened on Valentine's day, 1853. A post office was established in 1860, and a cotton gin was built in 1868. In 1865, a schoolhouse and subscription library were also built. In 1901, Long Beach became a city and its first mayor was J.C. Payne. In 1916, the city name was changed to Jackson after Confederate General Robert E. Lee's death at Appomattox Court House
