However, gun control laws were repealed in 1994 and long-standing gun violence problems continue today.

The law was repealed in 1932. In 1938, the National Rifle Association (NRA) founded the National Pistol and Knife Club to promote gun safety. In 1957, the NRA unsuccessfully opposed an amendment to the Mississippi Constitution that would have allowed concealed handguns on university campuses. In 1974, Ole Miss passed a bill making it illegal for students or faculty members to possess or use firearms on public property unless they had a license from their school or college. This law was repealed in 1978. In 1980, Mississippi became the first state to pass a handgun ban effective immediately. The law was repealed in 1984. In 1990, Ole Miss passed another bill making it illegal for citizens not residing within its boundaries to possess or use firearms except with a license from their home county government or sheriff’s office. This law also was repealed in 1994. In 1995, Mississippi enacted legislation designed to increase gun safety by creating more stringent requirements for firearm licensing and registration than are currently required by federal law. The legislation failed after being met with criticism from gun rights advocates who argued that it would not do enough to protect citizens from violent criminals who could easily obtain licenses and weapons under these new regulations.
Long Beach, Mississippi is a small town located in the U.S. state of Mississippi. As of the 2010 census, the population was 1,715. The community is named after Long Island, New York. The first house in Long Beach was built by John and Sarah Bogue in 1836. A post office was established in 1841, and the community name changed to Long Beach in 1851 when it became part of Jackson County. In 1907, the post office moved to Gulfport and was renamed Gulfport Post Office until it closed in 1967. The community has seen many changes over the years; its only grocery store closed down in 1984 and its only other businesses were two convenience stores which did not open until 1991 and 1996 respectively. However, during the 1990s-2000s period, there were several construction projects that had a significant impact on Long Beach including a new high school (opened 2001), an expansion for Delta Airlines at their headquarters (opened 2002), and reconstruction of Main Street which included new sidewalks, streetlights, and turnpikes/motorists lanes into a bike lane/walkway called "The Boulevard". In recent years there have been efforts to revive interest within the community as well as improve infrastructure such as an expressway connecting Gulfport with Oxford proper which has not yet been completed however some residents are hopeful about it being finished soon given currentfunding limitations

Long Beach, Mississippi is a town in southwestern Mississippi. It was first settled in 1836 by the Choctaw people. The town was named for the long white beach on which it stands. In 1862, Long Beach was renamed Pascagoula and then Gulfport. The Post Office at Long Beach opened on July 1, 1868, and remained open until 1975. The first school in Long Beach was built on what is now Main Street. In 1880, the Long Beach Lumber Company erected a sawmill on current US-101 across from the present day Walmart store.
In 1892, the first white people settled in what is now Long Beach, Mississippi. The town was founded by Isaac Barnes and his family. Barnes ran a small post office in the town until he died in 1903. The settlement grew rapidly due to the arrival of new settlers, and by 1907 there were over 20 residents living in Long Beach. The first school in Long Beach was built in 1912. In 1938, the town became a city and was named after Mayor James W. Buchanan. In 1951, Long Beach voted to secede from Mississippi and become an independent city under its own government. Long Beach experienced some difficult times during the 1960s and 1970s due to racial segregation that continued until 1980. However, through activism and cooperation between the community and government officials, long-term challenges such as racism have been largely resolved.
