The ferry became an important link in the trade between Long Beach and Gulfport. In 1821, Wilkinson donated land to create a town square in honor of his friends and family who had contributed so much to Long Beach's development.Over time, Long Beach grew into one of Mississippi's most influential towns with its own economy and political power. It hosted many notable events including the 1886 Cotton States Convention where Ulysses S. Grant was elected president; the 1912 Louisiana gubernatorial election where James Moulton Booth won; and Tip O'Neill's successful run for mayor in 1978.
