The bridge was completed by 1825 and became an important transportation artery for goods between those two cities. By 1830, there were over 100 businesses in Long Beach with over $10 million worth of business transactions reported annually. In 1861, Confederate forces attacked Union troops stationed at Meridian plantation near present day Greenwood Village near Memphis before crossing into Alabama and invading Tennessee proper; this event is known as the Battle of Fort Sumter (1861). Many people from Long Beach relocated to support the Confederacy during this time including many merchants who had ties toJacksonville or Memphis During World War II, ammunition production at nearby Pascagoula plant increased exponentially due to wartime demand for munitions made in nearby states such as Louisiana and Tennessee After the war ended in 1945, many residents moved back into Long Beach because it had been economic development throughout most of postwar America’s post-war boom period The population peaked at 2,813 around 1970 then gradually declined until its current 1,551 count by 2010 . In 1902, residents of Long Beach voted to become an incorporated municipality. The first city hall in Long Beach was built in 1907. In 1916, the Mississippi Legislature designated Long Beach as a city with its own government. The first mayor of Long Beach was Byron Witherspoon. In 1938, Hurricane 39 destroyed most of Long Beach and left over 25% of its population homeless. After the storm, Mayor Witherspoon ordered all businesses to close until they could rebuild. In 1979, Mayor Witherspoon unveiled a new $5 million city hall which replaced the old building that had been damaged by Hurricane 38. The new hall was designed by architect Floyd Kapp and is made from redwood trees from nearby Live Oak National Forest.
