In 1902, Long Beach incorporated as a municipality. The town was renamed for General John J. Pershing on December 12, 1916, during World War I to recognize his role in the war effort and as a symbol of American commitment to the war zone. According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 0.9 square miles (2 km²), all land. As of the census[10] of 2000, there were 1,746 people, 553 households, and 469 families residing in the town; the population density was 915.5 people per square mile (345.4/km²). There were 631 housing units at an average density of 345.6 per square mile (138.1/km²). The racial makeup of the town was 98% White and 2% African American

The town was founded on December 5, 1876 by James A. McAlester and his family from Ohio as a small farming community named after their native land of Long Island (now Nassau), New York. It would take until 1915 for the town to annex what are now parts of Jackson and Biloxi Counties. On October 3, 1907, Long Beach voted to become an independent municipal government with its own courts and police department under the leadership of Mayor Harry Hargrave. The vote followed a proposal put forth by local citizens committee chairman John Fenton that would have allowed city residents to self-govern without having to comply with state laws governing towns with populations over 10 thousand people
The area now known as Long Beach, Mississippi was first settled by the Choctaw in the early 1800s. In 1824, a group of white men and boys who had recently arrived on the Gulf Coast decided to establish a town in what is now Meridian County. They named their new community “Long Beach” after a small bay near their original landing site. The first white man to live in Long Beach was James Gist, who built his home on an island in the bay. He and his family were the only residents of Long Beach for many years. In 1836, a group of African Americans set out from Stroudsburg, Pennsylvania to start a plantation in what is now Lowndes County. They called their new settlement “Long Beach” because they thought it would be more likely to be accepted by local whites than any other possible name. The first black general settler in Long Beach was Obadiah Bowen, who owned land around present-day Northport and established a ferry service between Northport and Long Beach during this time period. In 1842, one of Mississippi’s earliest political subdivisions was created when Lowndes County became part of the state. This subdivision included parts of what is now Long Beach as well as much of Mobile County. At this time, most African American settlers living within Lowndes County were located near Jacksonville or Meridianville because those areas were considered more prosperous than other parts of the state at that time. However, over time some African American families moved into long beach due to its growing reputation as a welcoming community for blacks seeking opportunities beyond poverty and racism
