Long Beach is an unincorporated community in southwestern Mississippi on the Gulf of Mexico. The population was 927 as of the 2010 census. It is part of the Jackson, MS Metropolitan Statistical Area. The area that now makes up Long Beach was first settled by Choctaw people in the 17th century. In 1821, a group of Seminoles and Creek people moved to what is now Long Beach from their original land in Alabama and Carolina. They named their new settlement after local creek name "Long" because it was so long between waterfalls they could find passage over when travelling through the area. As inland cotton plantations grew rapidly in Mississippi during the antebellum period, many white men from Jacksonville and other coastal areas began moving into what is now Long Beach to work on these plantations. The town's earliest residents were mostly African Americans who worked as laborers on plantation fields or as merchants and professionals withinJacksonville itself. During Reconstruction era (1868-1876), many African Americans were freed from slavery, but many remained poor and ineligible for some basic rights such as voting or education opportunities given their previous experiences under bondage. As a result, most black residents of Long Beach elected to remain politically inactive until after World War II, when they slowly regained access to education, employment, housing and other opportunities enjoyed by other Mississippians postwar

Long Beach was founded in 1892 by James W. Haughey and David N. Rankin. It became a city in 1907 and was named for Long Beach, California. In 1938, the city annexed the smaller town of Crestwood and renamed it Long Beach Heights.
