On November 5, 1892, the Laurel County Courthouse was completed. The $10,000 cost was funded with a bond issue. The courthouse opened on December 1st. The first courthouse in Laurel was built in 1851 and burned down in 1865. A new courthouse was built in 1892 and it served until 1935 when it became the county jail. It burned down again in 1955 and never reopened. In 1944, the state of Mississippi purchased the old county jail from the government of Laurel for $1 million and moved it to Jackson, Mississippi. Laurel, Mississippi is a city in Yazoo County, Mississippi, United States. The population was 2,636 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Yazoo County. The city was founded in 1853 by two men named John and James Hill. The first post office opened in 1854 and was called "Hill's Point." The name change to Laurel on February 20 of that year. A fire destroyed most of the town in 1861 but it was rebuilt and renamed after General Andrew Jackson. In 1892, a railroad line arrived through the town and changed its name to LaurelRailroad; this led to an increase in development around the railway depot which became known as "Laurel Station." In 1907, a tornado touched down near Laurel and damage was extensive; however it did not kill any people or cause any significant damage. A second tornado touched down just east of town on April 12th 1990 killing one person and injuring over 50 others. It has been estimated that up to $2 billion worth of damages have been caused by tornadoes within ZIP code 70389 since 1950 including Ikea stores, corn cribs (1951), small businesses (1955), churches (1957), high school football stadiums (1975), factories (1981-1984) as well as homes (1985-1990).
