Laurel is a town in Jackson County, Mississippi, United States. It was founded on the Organ Pipe Creek by Frenchmen in 1819. The first post office was established in 1824, and the first store was built in 1830. The town became a stop on the Memphis-Jackson Railroad in 1854. In 1860, it became the capital of Jackson County; until that time, it had been located at Vicksburg. In 1865, it was moved to its present location because of damage done to the federal courthouse by Union forces during the American Civil War. The population of Laurel peaked at 2,500 in 1920 but then declined to 1,500 after World War II until it reached its current level of about 1,000 today. The history of Laurel goes back long before any residents were born thereabouts. Indian traders and settleters from what is now Louisiana passed through here early on and began trading goods with Native Americans who lived along Organ Pipe Creek and its tributaries. By 1796, several families had made their homes upriver from where they resided on Baton Rouge Bayou near modern day Jefferson City (now "Vicksburg"). They named their settlement Butch's Ferry due to an old chief who dwelt thereabouts - butch being short for "chief." In 1819 an artist named James Neely came downriver from Tennessee looking for land he could purchase for his painting business ashore at New Orleans (then called "Plaindeal"). He crossed over into Jackson County just north of present day Laurel and set up shop among local native people known as the Choctaws or Chickasaws - one group led by Chief Osage Pawnee wigwam Noemaatkiyakaassa ("Old Man"), later known as Ozzie Smith Sr.. Mr Neely soon realized that he needed more than just ground cover for his paintings; he wanted a permanent home so that his artists could live and work within easy reach of themselves and also access necessary supplies for their artistry without having to leave their homes daily... So Neely purchased 640 acres west of Gadsden Bridge (present day Black River Road) between White Oak Swamp & Cedar Hills Lake - essentially what is now downtown Laurel! From this purchase Neely developed what would become his most famous commodity: oil paintings! On July 3rd 1840 while passing through Butchie’s Ferry Landing on I-285 southbound upon leaving Memphis we observed several vessels anchored offshore laden with various pieces o f furniture – many considered “grandeur items” such as chandeliers etcetera brought over especially for this visit – providing us w e With additional motive b ut not actually seeing anything productive ashore we quickly gathered our things again u nderneath our vehicle & drove away satisfied vowing to return some time soon after hearing news back home that General Andrew Johnson had placed General Ulysses S Grant At Headquaters HQ c/o Sarah Sanders sealed inside an Army trunk!! Of course events transpired which voided all these plans leading us taLaurel proper only 8 years later when John F Kennedy was assassinated !! Although much has changed since then including development pressures & numerous hurricanes which have devastated much loved infrastructure vandals are still common here & Heritage Days are still celebrated annually thru excellent organization by locally funded groups like Mark Twain Museum Foundation !!!
In the early 1800s, Laurel was an important trading post on the Natchez Trace. The town was also known for its annual Cotton Festival, which took place in late April or early May.
