The name change to Jackson on December 15, 1851, when Jackson County was created from Lauderdale County. The town has experienced growth since its incorporation as a municipality; it had a population of 2,191 as of the 2010 census. Growth has been driven by manufacturing and agriculture; both industries have declined since 2000. Manufacturing jobs were lost during the Great Recession while agriculture has continued to grow due to increased production of corn and other crops for local food processors or export markets.
