Laurel’s history is significant not just because it is home to one of America’s first post offices but also because it has been witness to some of our most dramatic moments in Jackson County history: including Hurricane Katrina’s landfall here on August 29th 2005; Hurricane Rita’s destructive storm surge onto this parched coastal region two years later; and Hurricane Earl’s devastating windstorm that impacted this area early last year).
