Laurel, Mississippi is a town in Marshall County, Mississippi, United States. The population was 3,811 at the 2010 census. Laurel is the only municipality inMarshall County and it is part of the Jackson metropolitan area. The town has a ZIP code of 38359. The first settlement in Laurel was made on May 10, 1819 by twenty-eight pioneers from Illinois led by Captain John Butler. The first white settler named Laurel was James Benge who arrived with his family in 1824. By 1830, most of what is now Marshall County had been settled and there were only a few people living in Clarksville and Meridian Township due to unsuccessfully trying to get land grants from the federal government. In 1837, General Andrew Jackson became President of the United States and began pushing for statehood for Mississippi Territory which included all of Louisiana as well as Alabama and Georgia. He wanted to make sure that Native American tribes such as the Creek (or Chickasaw) were properly represented so he appointed James Kountz as commissioner to study Indian affairs in satellite western counties including Marshall County; this would later be called road development within Jackson area because many roads ran through or passed through rural areas around Laurel without going any further than Clarksville or Meridian Township where they originated from. Kountz's report concluded that there was no need for a village or post office in Laurel since transportation available outside of Jackson would take care of most needs such as mail delivery etc., therefore an act was passed by Congress on March 2nd 1840 giving settlers access to Utopian land grants just east of Claiborne Road known then as East Baton Rouge Parish extending all the way down into Mobile Bayou which also bordered Missouri River Valley but not into Arkansas side until after cotton prices crashed due to over production causing slave owners to sell their slaves back home). This allowed settlers from Illinois, Kentucky and other parts of America access to land that would become Oneida County (now Livingston Parish) west of New Orleans during Reconstruction era following American Civil War; although some people lived there until recent times during time when Oneida Parish boundaries expanded eastward beyond I-10 freeway line north/south almost reaching Baton Rouge City limits before turning south again near exit 9 off I-10 Interstate 5 highway eAST TUBAGO COUNTY LAUREL MISSISSIPPI

Laurel, Mississippi is a small town located in Jackson County, Mississippi. For many years it was one of the most thriving and diverse communities in the state. Laurel’s history goes back to 1892 when a group of seven farmers founded the town on land they had bought from a white man. The original settlers were all African American and they built their homes and businesses within two years of each other. By 1915, the population of Laurel had reached 1,100 people and it quickly became an important stop on the bus route connecting Jackson and Starkville. In 1925, the first black school opened in Laurel and by 1938 all black students were allowed to attend white schools in neighboring towns. The arrival of automobiles made getting around town much easier and by 1960 Laurel had become one of the most segregated cities in Mississippi. Despite this barrier, however, community spirit was still very strong and over time many different organizations have been formed to help promote social justice for both citizens and immigrants alike. In 2007, during Barack Obama’s presidential campaign visit to Mississippi, he announced his support for increasing funding for education initiatives in local municipalities such as Laurel which would help reverse discrimination against minority groups throughout the state
Laurel was founded in 1821 by John Denton and his wife, Elizabeth. The town was named for the Laurel Forest that extended along the town's eastern border. Industry boom times in the early 1890s led to a population growth rate of over 50%. However, this prosperity collapsed during World War I and after the war, industry declined significantly. With no new industry investment coming through until the 1920s, many residents left Laurel for better-paying jobs elsewhere. To make up for lostemployment opportunities, businesses opened up in other parts of Mississippi during this time period. This increased competition caused prices to increase and productivity to drop; eventually leading to a decline in business activity and an exodus of workers from Laurel in 1925. During this time period, there were also several cases of lynching which negatively impacted public opinion towards black people living within white society. This contributed to social unrest which culminated with a raid on the Denton home on December 10th of 1926 that resulted in eight arrests and $5,000 worth of damage being done. Afterward, tensions between black housing developments and white neighborhoods continued until desegregation took place at local schools some years later
