Rifle shootings quickly replaced Target Pistol shooting as the main form of gun sport in Laurel because it was easier to carry around and shoot at than a target pistol. On October 16, 1892, at 5:00 pm, a group of men led by Johnnie C. Campbell opened fire on citizens of Laurel in what is now known as the “Athens Massacre.” The gunmen killed six people and injured three others before fleeing the scene.
Laurel, Mississippi is a small town in the Choctaw Nation of Oklahoma. The population was 3,819 at the 2000 census. It is located on US 69 between I-35 and US 72. The town began as a plantation in 1848 and became an agricultural center after it was bought by George Pullen in 1885. The townspeople were mostly of European descent until after the American Civil War when many African Americans migrated to the area because of Reconstruction policies designed to make white people feel guilty about their roles in slavery. It was not until 1963 that Laurel's first black school opened, which served all grade levels from pre-K to 12th grade. In 1977, the first African American doctor entered Laurel's community when Dr. Julius Ballard came to work at Memorial Hospital.

Laurel was founded in 1837 by James Robertson, a Scottish immigrant. The town was named after Laurel Oak, which is located in the town center. After a few years, Robertson sold the land to J.B. Haley and Fenton Morton for $1,000. In 1841, Haley purchased the remaining shares from Morton and founded the city of Laurel on what is now Main Street. The first President of Laurel was Hugh McCulloch. In 1865, Confederate General Braxton Bragg invaded Mississippi and burned down part of what is now downtown Laurel while sparing other parts of the town. This event is generally considered to be one of the most destructive fires in Mississippi history. The city of Laurel experienced several dramatic changes during its early years including an increase in population due to immigration and natural selection (the influx of new people helped change many aspects of local life). For many years, it was thought that both sides were responsible for the fire that destroyed much of downtown in 1865; however, more recent research has shown that there may have been some connection between Confederate forces and arsonists overall
Laurel was founded in 1824 by John Laurens and his wife, Eliza. The town was named for Laurel Creek, which ran through it. By 1830, the Laurens had four families living there: two men, one woman, and six children. In 1831, they built a gristmill on the creek. The mill continued to be in use until it was destroyed by a fire in 1901. In 1832, John Laurens married Minerva Ballard and they moved to Meridian Township. There they started a grocery store and got involved with politics. They were first elected as members of the Meridian Township Council in 1840 but resigned from office after one year because of their pregnancy. They later became members of the Mississippi House of Representatives where they served from 1845-1849 and 1861-1865. In 1865, when Lincoln was assassinated, he recommended that both Republicans and Unionists vote for his vice president instead of choosing a man who would be more likely to carry out Lincoln's wishes about Reconstructionreach Fort Sumter without bloodsheds. When Andrew Johnson took office as president, he decided not to follow Lincoln's recommendation and tried to get Grant appointed instead which resulted in some violence between Grant's troops andlar Bellairs' militia
