Laurel, Mississippi is a small town in the Gulf Coast region of Mississippi. The population was 9,364 at the 2000 census. It lies in Jefferson County. The name Laurel comes from "Halmüller" meaning "place where trees grow." The first settlers in Laurel were Dutch and they named the settlement after their friend and mentor, Pieter Hollaert. Hollaert had migrated to America from Holland in 1675 and became a part of what is now Delaware County, Pennsylvania. He taught English to Native American students before he moved to Laurel in 1727 as pastor of an Anglican church there. Hollaert's successors served as pastors until 1814 when James Kenedy took over and made it his mission to promote education in the area. In 1849, Kenedy founded Central High School which remains one of the oldest public high schools in Mississippi today. In 1865, when it merged with Jackson High School, Laurel became one of two towns within Jefferson County that voted to become a county seat; this vote led to its incorporation into the state of Mississippi on January 1, 1870. Laurel has experienced some significant changes throughout its history including floods caused by Hurricane Katrina which destroyed most of the town center on August 29th 2005; then-Governor Phil Bryant announced plans for $10 million dollars towards rebuild but never followed through due to politicking by local politicians; then-Senator Thad Cochran issued a statement opposing building any new structures because they would only exacerbate an already existent problem with loss or damage from future storms; however construction eventually began despite these obstacles after Cochran resigned from office following bribery allegations connected with his campaign trail activities) In recent years much progress has been made for downtown Laurel including new shopping malls (Target & Walmart), restaurants (Applebee's & Dominos), movie theaters (DMAX & Regal), and more importantly several large homes have been constructed near downtown specifically for use as rental units/apartments/condos/etc.. Many people believe that downtown may be becoming too dense for business purposes so efforts are being made to open up space through annexation or rezoning

It was platted in 1857 and named for Lieutenant-Governor James Laurel of Maryland. The community had a two-story schoolhouse, a blacksmith shop, a store, and an early post office. A Methodist church was built in 1892 and enlarged in 1907. In the 1930s Laurel had one of the largest white working classes in Jackson County according to the Works Progress Administration (WPA). In 1937 when WPA dollars were eliminated following the Great Depression, most of Laurel's residents lost their jobs because no new funds were available to subsidize local economy. In 1939 most residents left after being told by state government that they would be forced to leave if they did not vote for Franklin D. Roosevelt during his election campaign; some returned after he won but many others chose not to return due to fear of retribution from state government officials. Residents have occasionally rallied around political causes over the years - notably voting againstafrican American military desegregation on several occasions - but few people maintain permanent roots in their communities despite significant economic advancement since then.
Laurel, Mississippi was founded in 1847 by James P. Laurel and his wife, Clarissa. The townspeople were attracted to the panhandle of land that stretched from Mobile County to Jackson County. By 1850, the population had grown to about 100 residents. The first school was built in 1851 and soon other businesses followed suit. In 1854, the state Legislature passed a bill creating a bank in Laurel and it opened for business on July 1, 1855. In 1865, the first railroad reached Laurel and by 1870, there were six trains running through the town each day. The industry that developed around Laurel helped contribute significantly to its growth over the years. lumbering became an important part of the economy while cotton farming became more common as tourists began coming to see what Greco-Roman ruins still standing in downtown (now known asOld Town) were all about! The townspeople also started building homes around this time which continued until after World War II when they started moving out into nicer neighborhoods outside of town.
