Laurel, Mississippi is a town in Yazoo County, Mississippi. The population was 1,521 at the 2010 census. Laurel is the seat of Yazoo County and the only municipality in Yazoo County. It is part of the Jackson metropolitan area. The first white person to live in what is now Laurel was James Neal on July 3, 1814. He and his family were pioneers who arrived from Georgia during the Natchez Expedition of 1813-1814. When James Neal died in 1816, he bequeathed his land to his nephew William Cranch for settlement by white people according to their own choice. In 1820, two men named Tryon boughtNeal's land for $2 per acre from his nephews or heirs until such time as someone could provide evidence that white people would actually inhabit and settle it. Tryon renamed this property "Laurel" after himself and moved his family there sometime before 1830 when he became sheriff of Yazoo County (later Jackson). In 1830, a group led by John Gadsden set out from Mobile with three boats loaded with settlers called the Flower Boys - John Redman (a slave), Isaac Smith (of English descent), and Elijah Whitehead - to found what would become Mississippian City on credit given them by Gadsden's father-in-law John Pemberton Sr.. On November 17, 1830 they reached what is now Meridian Street in downtown Laurel where they erected a log courthouse which served as both legal and judicial center for most of northeast Mississippi until removal operations began in 1840 under General Andrew Johnson's Proclamation No. 11 which ordered all Native American citizens removed from all public lands east of Arkansas River without compensation or heritable title thereto excepting mineral rights discovered since that date! The first military troops ever called into service against Indians were those dispatched under General Robert E Lee at Laurel Station on February 14th 1861! All Native American citizens must leave within seven days pursuant to Proclamation No: 11/3(b) & Orderlies #1 thru #7 followed by relocating any remaining inhabitants onto Indian reservations located west of Memphis across the Arkansas River! distribution centers were established at different locations throughout Northeastern Mississippi – including Clarksville (& West Columbia), Tupelo (& Monroe), Rogers City (& Tellico Hills) – prior to Removal Operations which proceeded rapidly due largely to inadequate funding allocations provided by President Abraham Lincoln… La Grange Plantation near present day Union Gap Road situat

However, during World War II it became one of the mostimportant military bases in Mississippi because it played an important role in providing food and munitions to the war effort. After the war ended, many millers decided to move their operations away from Laurel because of environmental damage done by decades of farming activities. However, some small businesses managed to stay until around 1990 when they too were forced out due to competition from larger companies. Today, Laurel is home to a few dozen elderly residents who use their property for farm purposes or for storage on account of lack of space within Meridian County limits. However, much like other Old South towns which closed down over time due to technological advancements or economic problems outside their control (e.g., Memphis), there are few reminders that this once thriving community once thrived – aside from periodic visits from tourists lookingfor ghost stories about “the good old days” when everyone ate mosquitoes and you could go into any dark alley without fear of being robbed!
In 1892, an act was passed in the Mississippi General Assembly approving a town named Laurel. The name honor Governor James A. Richardson and his wife, Flora Belle Richardson. The first post office at Laurel was established on December 22, 1892. The town quickly developed into a small community with a population of about fifty people. By 1907, the population had grown to two hundred people and by 1916 it had reached three hundred. In 1922, the General Assembly approved plans for the creation of a city within Laurel with a population of four thousand people. However, this proposal was never realized and the town continued to grow until its demise in 1967.
