Laurel is a town in Hinds County, Mississippi, United States. The population was 7,868 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Jackson metropolitan area. Laurel was founded in 1836 by General James K. Polk and his family as a small post office on the Yazoo River. In 1848, it became a community under the name of Holly Springs. The first store in Laurel opened in 1851 and was run by an American Express merchant named Wm. Jourdan. A post office called Laurel was established in 1856, and remained in operation until 1959 when it merged with nearby Harrisonburg to form Jackson-Harrisonburg incorporation. In 1933, when Jackson incorporated as a city, Laurel became its first municipality within that city limits and has retained that status ever since. The population of Jackson peaked at over 100,000 during the 1950s but has declined since then due to various factors including suburbanization and loss of jobs in manufacturing strongholds such as Hardee's restaurants and GM plants across the state periphery into whichJackson had begun to grow rapidly (see also: "Jackson Census 2000"). However, recent growth has been seen primarily among housing developments near Interstate 20 along downtown Jackson's riverfront corridor; this is largely due to job growth associated with new hotel/motels built adjacent to Interstate 20 expansions eastward from Memphis (see also: "Jacksons Downtown Development"). Accordingly, Laurel is one of very few towns remaining within Hinds County without significant decline or exit from local jurisdiction during recent decades – other examples include Tupelo (west) and Canton (east). This stability may be partially attributed to strong support for local government within both communities' respective families; while much reliance upon out-of-town shopping attractions have disappeared over time due either to changing demographics or increased competition from those attractions outside of their own communities', residents continue to rely heavily upon services provided by their respective municipal governments – see generally "Laurels Municipal Government" for more detailed information about that topic). Today’s Laurel features many of its important historical landmarks dating back centuries including Hargrave House where General James K Polk stayed while campaigning for president throughout 1936 & 1937; Griggs Chapel which dates back to 1865 & serves as the oldest Episcopal church west of Mobile Bayou; Masonic Lodge #2 where John Lennon performed his famous “Eleanor Rigby” song at age 17 on December 8th 1964; Stroud Plantation which still contains some evidence related thereto from circa 1800 onwards including slave quarters & gardens etc.; Plus many newer businesses such as Walmart Supercenter located just off I-20 Exit 159B opposite Pizza Hut - making it one busy intersection!
