Laurel, Mississippi is home to the National Rifle Association’s (NRA) Mississippi Branch and has been a stronghold of gun ownership for over 100 years. The city was named after General Andrew Jackson who was born in Laurens County, South Carolina and died in 1845 in Tennessee. In 1873, Congress passed the first federal gun law in America which banned handguns without a license from all citizens except those owning shotguns that could be used for hunting or fishing purposes. It wasn’t until 1934 that the NRA began sponsoring annual rifle matches here. The city also boasts one of the oldest continuously operating police departments in the United States with jurisdiction over both rural areas as well as town limits within Laurel County. In 1945, when Confederate General Robert E Lee surrendered at Appomattox Court House, most of South Carolina had already fallen victim to Union troops; however, much like other Southern towns throughout the war-torn country, Laurel remained unoccupied by Union troops for an extended period of time until they finally withdrew from town on April 9th,. 1946 . Since then, many businesses have opened up in downtown Laurel including restaurants such as Chick-fil-A and Dunkin' Donuts; however, local government services remain mostly unchanged with just one exception - phone service has been discontinued here since 2009 due to budget cuts within state government).
