Robert Ewell's brigade attacked Union forces at Stones River but were repulsed with heavy losses; this event is known as the Battle of Laurel Hill . In 1870, during Reconstruction, white Supremacists burned down a black church which served as an interim courthouse; this event is known as the burning of the African Methodist Episcopal Church (AME) . Throughout much of its history, Laurel has been racially segregated despite efforts to integrate it into society through education and public policy initiatives instituted by both white and black residents alike. The most recent example of such segregation came in 2003 when Mardi Gras arrived in town while African-Americans were prohibited from participating due to desegregation laws passed that year statewide; this event led to many businesses closing their doors throughout Laurel resulting in what has been called "the economic boycott". A printing press was set up in 1851 and soon began publishing local newspapers such as "The Republican" and "The Courier". By 1870, Laurel had a population of 300 people and two churches. During Reconstruction (1868-1877), many African Americans were re-educated or moved to other parts of Mississippi to work on plantations or become sharecroppers. Many residents of Laurel stayed behind to continue their own businesses or resistance against white supremacy. However, some black families did move away during this time; one family left for Illinois after being ordered off their plantation by white supremacists during Reconstruction. In 1901, an election resulted in the creation of a government for Eastern Mississippi through which various interests could be represented without interference from whites living along the riverbanks outside of town limits - an event that helped spur economic development within town limits over time. While most members of the community voted Democrat until 1964 (when they switched to becoming independent), most business owners within town limits continued to support Democratic candidates throughout this era despite claims by some Republicans that they would annex/take over all aspects of local life should they win control of Congress at any future point).
