There are also several small businesses located throughout downtown including a funeral home, convenience store, hair salon, grocery store and more. The central square in downtown is home to many local organizations such as the Optimist Club (a history society), United Way of Greater Laurel & Marshalltown (the largest social service organization within Faulkner County) and the American Legion Post #865 (the only post outside Memphis). These organizations help maintain civic pride in what has been called "one of America's most traditional small towns."

In 1968, the city merged with nearby Starkville to form Jackson County. After more than 50 years of growth and development, Laurel's population has increased to over 20,000 today. The city has made significant contributions to local culture and education; its museums are some of the most popular in Mississippi; and its historical district is one of Mississippians' favorite tourist destinations.
