The first white settler in Laurel was Isaac Woodward in 1836. He built a cabin on Locust Creek and named it after himself, Laurence Woodward. There were only 10 settlers in Laurel at the time but it rapidly grew into an important community with many stores, churches, schools and businesses by 1840. The first post office in Laurel opened in 1846 and remained open until 1865 when it moved to Mount Pleasant. The first county courthouse was built here in 1870 and still stands today as part of the courthouse complex that includes five other buildings including two jails and one jail annexe. In 1872, African Americans were brought to work on plantations around this area as sharecroppers but they staged several rebellions against their masters over food shortages and discrimination before eventually being incorporated into white society through education and integration into local industry. Many black farmers did not have enough land to support themselves so they worked for white landowners instead providing labor that helped improve property values among their peers within society overall while also contributing to society's economy through goods production (farming). Despite these challenges many black farmers managed to maintain some level of self-respect until recently when race relations continue to be tense both locally and nationally throughout American history although recent efforts have been made towards closer racial understanding across lines regardless of social status/position within our country

Laurel, Mississippi is a small town in the southwestern corner of Mississippi. The community was founded in 1892 by white settlers who named it after Laurel in Maryland. At that time, Laurel was an unincorporated community on the bank of the Yazoo River. The first permanent settler in Laurel was James Waddell, who arrived in 1892 and built a log cabin on the banks of the river. By 1907, there were only six residents living in Laurel; all were related to one another through marriage or ancestry. For many years, Laurel functioned as a rural backwater until it became known for its whiteisite and African American-owned businesses. In 1960, when two-thirds of Mississippians were black, Laurel's population surpassed 100 people. Over the next few decades, however, racial tension grew increasingly entrenched within the town as black families began to move away for economic opportunities and whites increased their dominance over local politics and life. In 1998, violence erupted between white supremacists and LaRouche supporters during a peaceful rally commemorating 50 years since integration at nearby Jackson State University; 25 people were injured while rioters burned buildings and looted stores. In 2001, following an effort by state legislators to increase Hispanic representation in local government through appointments to commissions and workshops targeting Latino leaders in Central Mississippi,[1] Laurels mayor announced he would not participate in any future citywide planning meetings because they "represented little value" to him culturally speaking.[2] The decision set off a heated debate within lauren about whether or not race should be considered as part of municipal governance - with some residents arguing that open discussion is necessary for everyone involved before anything substantive can be accomplished[3]. Despite Mayor Waddell's decision not to participate,[4], subsequent city wide planning meetings have been largely successful in developing common interests amongst all sectors of society towards increasing development potential within lauren.[5]
Laurel was founded in 1824 as a small community on the levee system near the present day city of Jackson. The town was named for General James Laurel, who had fought against Native American raids in the area. By 1830, Laurel had an population of about 100 people and a school. It declined during the 1830s due to Indian Removal and cotton production in nearby Jackson. In 1840, white men from Meridian settled along the riverbanks east of Laurel and began to build stores and homes. The town continued to decline until it was abandoned in 1854 by its last residents after floods ruined their crops. The site is now occupied by industrial plants
