Laurel, Mississippi is a small town in the Gulf of Mexico. It was founded in 1876 by General James Vicksburg and his family. The town served as the capital of Mississippi from 1881 to 1885. In 1938, it was hit by a devastating tornado that killed over 100 people. Despite the tragedy, Laurel has continued to grow and prosper since then. Today, the town has a population of around 2,500 residents. Laurel is located on the east side of Missisippi River and approximately 24 miles southeast of Jackson. The city proper is only about 1 square mile and lies on the banks of Cypress Creek which forms its borders to the north and south. The main industry in Laurel is agriculture which includes raised pigs, chickens, cottonseed oil production, cornstalks/stalks oil production and some fishing techniques such as catfish farming. There are also several small businesses including a bank and newsagency among others that contribute to local economy. In recent years, there has been an increase in development in Laurel with new apartment complexes being built as well as numerous retail establishments complete with grocery stores (including Safeway), churches (the largest being First Baptist Church) as well as several restaurants and bars catering to local tastes - all within walking distance or short cars ride from downtown Laurels shopping area

Laurel, Mississippi is a small town located in Jackson County, Mississippi. The population was 5,829 at the 2010 census. Laurel was founded in 1829 and named for General James H. Laurel who helped lead American forces during the Mexican-American War. The first store in Laurel opened in 1835 and was operated by a Quaker couple name of Fielding and Smith. Many early settlers were women as there were no men available to run stores or farms in this area. In 1850, John Davidson established the first post office in Laurel and it remained open until 1907 when it was discontinued due to lack of mail service. A school began operations in 1865 and continued until 1920 when it closed due to budget cuts by the government. A new school opened on July 1st, 1951 which continues to be used today as the only high school in town. In 1935, President Franklin D. Roosevelt made history by visiting Laurel while he was campaigning for reelection against incumbent challenger Joseph Ivey Jr.. Roosevelt spoke at a local farmers' meeting where he praised the work done by local farmers and said that his policies would help these people "start over again". This event marked an important turning point for Laurel as it became known as one of America’s “little towns” because of Roosevelts visiting schedule throughout the 1930s. In 1941, Hurricane Katrina struck Laurel and caused significant damage including destroyed homes, churches, businesses and more importantly loss of life both human and property values within minutes of landfall). Aftermath recovery efforts continue today with assistance from military personnel from across America . Today, much has changed since FDR's visit but many of those things that made Laurel so special have stayed around such as its small town feel; its friendly residents who are constantly willing to help out; its rich history which can be seen through its various buildings such as churches; schools; post office; grocery stores; etc.; even its very own football team – The Laurel Hornets!
The first white settlers in Laurel, Mississippi, arrived in 1814. The town was named for General James H. Laurel, who had won a victory at the Battle of Shiloh on April 6, 1862. The town grew rapidly during the 1830s and 1840s due to the increase in cotton production in the area. By 1851, there were more than 400 people living in Laurel. In 1857, a post office was established in Laurel and it operated until 1865. In 1861, Confederate forces invaded Arkansas and began invading southern states such as Mississippi. When Union troops reached Louisiana they discovered that Confederate forces had crossed the state line into Alabama and these troops marched through Laurel to join their comrades outside of Starkville. On October 16th 1861, General JEB Stuart rode into town with his Brigade of Confederates and captured all but four of the citizens before withdrawing back across the state line into Arkansas
