Jackson, Mississippi is a city in the Gulf of Mexico on the Lower Mississippi River. The population was 104,723 at the 2010 census. It was founded in 1817 by John L. Jackson and named for him. Jackson served as president of the United States from 1828 to 1830 and as vice president from 1829 to 1830. He remains an influential figure in American history because of his roles in creating both the U.S. Constitution and the Second Amendment to the United States Constitution. Jackson's seat as President of Mississippi is currently held by Democrat Phil Bryant, who was elected on November 3, 2018. The first permanent European settler in what is now Jackson County was French-Canadian Pierre Le Moyne de la Salle, who arrived in 1796 with his family and built a cabin on a bluff overlooking where present-day Jackson City lies today. By 1800, smallpox had killed most of La Salle's party including his five children; he abandoned his home and all he had left behind on July 4 that year, setting out for what would become Jackson County (then part of Stellate), Michigan Territory under General Anthony Wayne's command during the Northwest Indian War (1805-1811). In 1807 Acheson bought 9 acres (3 ha) near present day downtown Jacksonville from Pierre Bache du Boisvert for $10/acre ($320/ha). Jackson County became part of Alabama after its statehood in 1907; however, many Germans settled there during World War I due to wartime jobs available hereabouts as aluminum smelters were being built at Camden Plantation just outside Jacksonville proper by 1915. Many men returning home also brought their families with them; these German immigrants soon christened themselves "Jacks" after John L. Jacksons assistance getting them permits to settle eastward within Alabama limits while still claiming that they were Canadian citizens originally establishing their rights within their own homeland before finally recognizing America's purchase thereof some time prior thereto... As early as 1819 white men had been prospecting for oil along Mobile Bayou south of present day Montgomeryville when Brigadier General Andrew Pickens organized forces called "Opelousa Squadron" under Lt.-Colonel Nathaniel Pemberton YepomaJanuary 25th set out January 30th pursuit discovered no oil but reported finding several barrels said to be worth $1 each developed this property into eastern section now known as Porter Oil Fields west side...
