Jackson, Mississippi is a city in the U.S. state of Mississippi and the county seat of Jackson County. The population was 397,651 as of the 2010 census, making it the largest city in Hinds County. Jackson is located on both banks of the Will Rogers Ford River, which forms the core of its boundary with Lauderdale County to the south and east. The area now known as Jackson was first settled by people from Illinois around 1819. As African Americans increasingly relied upon plantation labor for subsistence rather than independent trade or manufacturing, White flight accelerated across much Southern states during this period – which led to increased poverty and inequality among black Mississippians while concurrently creating a larger Black American community throughout most southern states by 1860 (see Black America’s history: 1840-1860). After Union soldiers burned down several houses inhabited by freed slaves nearpresent-day Meridian Street in 1865 following an altercation over dinnerware material stored inside),[1] white flight stopped abruptly within Hinds County,[2] although some African Americans continued living scattered throughout rural areas outside urban areas until well into the 20th century.[3][4][5] Jackson grew rapidly during Reconstruction following reconstruction era events such as Thirteenth Amendment ratified on December 6, 1870,[6][7] endowing voting rights to all citizens without disabilities regardless of race or color; JUBILEE FUNDING Act created through New Deal legislation authorized federal spending for public education; passage by Congress (January 3, 1932) ofFair Employment Practices Act Amendments outlawed discrimination against employees based on sex or race at all participating businesses nationally; Interstate 25 opened up space along these two banks ofriverfrontDevelopment also paralleled rapid increasein automobile usage beginning in late 19th century resultingin massive job growth downtown
