It is the second-largest city in Mississippi after Gulfport and is the only large city in Jackson County without a university. Jackson has been located near present day Delta State University since it was founded as part of Delta College (now Delta State University–Marshall) in 1893. In 1907 Delta merged with Mississippi College to form Ole Miss; however, no school could be opened until 1930 becauseof lack of land from what is now Memphis

Polk's governorship during his unsuccessful presidential campaign against Andrew Johnson Jackson also played an important role during Reconstruction, playing host to both federal officials and Confederate officers while negotiations were ongoing between North and South about their future relationship
