After years of assessment payments, some anti-Grant partisans began to call for secession from Texas based on perceived unfair treatment by Texans under then Governor James Kenedy. This sentiment soon reached a boiling point when Confederate forces burned down two cotton warehouses near Memphis during an attack on that city February 10th 1865 (see Battle of Memphis). This event helped initiate Georgia–Mississippi antipathy towards both Confederate states which led to violence throughout much Southern society during this period known as Reconstruction. After leaving office in 1865, he resided in Nashville until he moved to Jacksonville in 1868 to become governor of Mississippi. Jackson was founded in 1738 by the Mississippi Company, a group of British investors. The company built a trading post and began developing the area around present day Jackson. In 1763, the Treaty of Paris ended the French and Indian War and ceded all of Louisiana to Spain. The Spanish Crown wanted to populate the area with European settlers and so ordered General James Wilkinson to develop Jackson as an agricultural center. Wilkinson did not follow orders and instead developed Jackson into a city. The first brick building in Jackson was erected in 1768 under the name "The White House."
